Bio

Prof. Osumi graduated from Tokyo Medical and Dental University, received a PhD from the same institution, and has been a professor at Tohoku University School of Medicine since 1998. She was one of Tohoku University's 25 Distinguished Professors from 2008 to 2011, and she is now Vice President of Tohoku University. Her research interests are in brain development, evolution, and disease, and she has a strong background in developmental biology. Her lab's ongoing projects include investigating the molecular mechanisms of brain development and disease, as well as their sex differences, using animal models of neurodevelopmental disorders. She is fascinated by DOHaD theory and is eager to learn about the regulatory mechanisms that govern the transgenerational effects of paternal ageing on offspring behavior. Her lab specializes in manipulating embryos and imaging brain cells. She has served on a number of governmental committees, including those dealing with ethical issues, grant system development, and career paths for young scientists. She represented the JST-funded CREST project (2005-2010) and the MEXT-funded Global COE project (2007-2012). She was the leader of a MEXT research group called "Integrative Research Toward Elucidation of Brain System Generation for Individuality" (16H06524). MEXT recently recognized her for her energetic activities on the science career choices of female high school students in the category of Promotion of Understanding.
